Lignite seams are known from the Liang Formation in the Lumut hills and Berakas syncline. The maximum thickness of seams in outcrop near Lumut is 3 metres but adjacent borehole data describe four seams from 6-10 metres under less than 90 metres of overburden. The formation is free of tectonic disturbance and near-horizontal in attitude. Figure 6.3 illustrates the type-section for the 'lignite series' in the Lumut-Telamba area.
