The variables that have the greatest influence on the end-product are depositional environment, subsidence and sediment supply. Peat formation requires certain critical initial conditions after establishment of which the interplay of subsidence, sediment supply and depositional environment result in a predictive progression of peat development (Anderson, 1961, 1983).
