Safety: A Fundament of BSP’s Operations

Published on October 1, 2024

Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) uphold its commitment to prioritising safety in all aspects of its operations. Understanding the significant impact of oil and gas production on people and the environment, BSP is dedicated to fostering a strong safety culture among aspiring engineers.

Haji Osmera Haji Othman, BSP’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager, recently underscored this commitment during a career lecture at University Technology Brunei (UTB). Addressing to nearly 40 students of chemical and process engineering students, they went on a deep dive into the critical challenges of personal and process safety within BSP’s daily operations, as well as what is involved in the continuous improvement in safety culture and performance.

Haji Osmera speaks on managing HSE challenges.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the Life-Saving Rules, as well as on the role of safety leaders in creating psychologically safe spaces – a critical element in enabling employees to speak up, and a vital practice in today’s industry.

During the dialogue session, the students also had the chance to have meaningful conversations with Haji Osmera directly. They eagerly ask about his personal experiences, particularly his approach to overcoming challenges and learning from mistakes throughout the course of his 30-year career.

“Always adopt a mindset of continuous improvement and always learning” shared Haji Osmera.

The event was part of UTB’s Faculty Lecture Series (FLS), which aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical industry experience by inviting industry professionals such as BSP.

“It was a pleasure to engage with future generations and contribute to their development” concluded Haji Osmera.

Haji Osmera Haji Othman received appreciation from Dr. Reddy Prasad D.M., Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at UTB.
