Strengthening Community Spirit: BSP hosts Community Townhalls

Published on December 23, 2024

While its Head Office is tucked in the heart of Seria, BSP's operations weave throughout the country as it delivers vital hydrocarbons as sources of energy. BSP takes pride in its people and assets, and on top of that, the communities it works with.

Social Performance continues to be the driving force in bridging the community with the business, further forging the relationship between BSP and its external stakeholders. This means understanding community concerns as BSP also executes its everyday operations: assessing and managing the potential social impact of all projects as part of integrated environmental, social and health impact assessments.  This is also embodied by the project teams (from senior leaders all the way to working level) as they seek to ensure they incorporate social performance into their decisions-making.

This also echoes BSP's commitment to being a responsible operator while delivering its goals to continue Sustainably Powering Brunei.

The Social Performance and Non-technical Risks team in BSP ensures that there are connections between the business and the community – and the Community Townhalls are one of the examples of these avenues. This year, BSP was honoured to host hundreds of its stakeholders including community leaders, government officials as well as non-government organisations at its townhalls throughout the year.

Dialogue sessions were held on topics such as security procedures at BSP assets, pipeline projects, maintenance activities as well as community efforts such as BSP's volunteer programme: BSPCares. The dialogue sessions provide valuable opportunities for all attendees to raise their concerns or share their thoughts and feedback on any BSP activities.

“Being a technical company, sometimes it's easy to see everything as machines and technology. But it's not as simple as that – we have a responsibility to make sure that we work and live in harmony with our fenceline communities,” shares Suffian Zainal, Social Performance Lead in BSP.

“Constant engagements and providing open ears to our external partners are very important in making sure that our operations progress seamlessly and smoothly. In BSP, we are extremely privileged to have had a very close relationship with our communities for almost a century – and we will continue to build on this legacy,” he further added.
