The Brunei Shell Refinery (BSR) was commissioned in 1983 by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and has left behind it a strong legacy. As the plant closed its door in 2021, it had produced approximately 18,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day that had fueled Brunei for four decades.
The Refinery’s success was built on the effort and commitment of its people, from the commissioning up until its last day of operations. To commemorate the dedication of BSP’s Orang Kitani (People) and to celebrate the historical landmark in Seria, an appreciation ceremony was held in 2023.
But not all good things come to an end – as the plant undergoes its decommissioning & restoration phase, the team at the BSR has found new life for its old tools and machinery.
The assets are changing career – they are going into education.
Through the signing of Memorandum of Agreement between Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) and the Ministry of Education, it was agreed that eligible used tools and machineries will be donated to select educational institutions. With this initiative, it is hoped that students’ learning experience will be elevated through access to real-life industry equipment.
By July 2024, approximately 200 used tools and equipments has been successfully handed over to Politeknik Brunei and Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Sultan Bolkiah Campus. The handover sessions were attended by members of the Decommissioning and Restoration department and Communications and External Affairs department, on behalf of BSP.
“This initiative is a true testament to BSP's commitment to sustainability by prolonging the life and use of its assets – even the smallest assets. The tools and machinery from Brunei Shell Refinery have served well, and we hope that it will continue to generate value in a different way: value for Brunei's future engineers and technicians,” shared Idris Jaafar, BSP's Decommissioning and Restoration Manager.
