Scholarship


Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) Scholarship is a special scheme for post ‘A’ level/International Baccalaureate Diploma/Advanced Diploma school leavers awarded to highly selected students to pursue Degree studies locally/overseas. The scholarship scheme also represents the important source of future graduate recruits.

Entry Requirement

• Citizen of Negara Brunei Darussalam.

• Obtained 3 relevant ‘A’ Level subjects with grade ‘BBB’ or above in Mathematics, Physics and one other relevant subject (preferably another science subject e.g. Chemistry/Biology/Geography/Further Maths)
OR 
minimum grade of 35 points in International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) in relevant subjects

OR 
minimum GPA 2.0 in relevant Advanced Diploma course

AND
have obtained 5 credits ‘O’ level subjects including Bahasa Melayu, English and Mathematics.

Eligibility Criteria

• Successful in Scholarship Assessment Centre.

• Be prepared to accept the course recommended by BSJV.

• Achieved satisfactory performance during work experience attachment (up to 10 weeks).

• Secured unconditional offer from accredited University acceptable to BSJV.

• Passed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with 6.5 overall band (if required by the University/Institution).

• Passed Medical exam conducted by Panaga Health Centre.

• Passed the Government Security Vetting.

• Be prepared to work for the Company (if required) and bonded for a period of 5 years from the commencement of employment.

SCHOLARSHIP ASSESSMENT CENTRE (AC)
What is Scholarship Assessment Centre?
A one-day assessment to measure individual’s potentials on leadership qualities and team-working using Shell International framework.

What are the activities involved?

Candidates will be invited to a welcoming briefing prior to the AC.

Candidates will undergo 3 different exercises during the AC:-
1. Group Discussion
2. In-Tray
3. Proposal

Who are the assessors?
Candidates will be observed and assessed by 6 qualified assessors, who will discuss your work with you. These Assessors have been specially trained to observe and record your performance and behaviours throughout the session.

FAQs

Q. What will happen at the Assessment Centre?

A. An Assessment Centre is where you will be asked to carry a collection of exercises to help us see what your skills and qualities are. In some of the exercises, you will work together as a team and in some, you will work individually. You will be assessed by qualified assessors. During the day, the exercises will give you an opportunity to meet some BSJV staff, to get to know of our work environment in an oil and gas company. 

Q. When will I hear the result from the Assessment Centre?

A. Successful candidates will be notified at the soonest.

Q. If I am offered a BSP Scholarship, what will the conditions be?

A. If you are offered a scholarship it will be subject to the following conditions:
• You are willing to study a course which BSJV wishes to sponsor
• You are able to fulfil the Government Scholarship requirement (security vetting)
• You are prepared to be bonded to work for BSJV for a period of 5 years after successful completion of studies
• Your English language level is sufficient to be able to cope with studies in the United Kingdom (IELTS – 6.5 overall band, if required by the University)
• You are medically fit

Q. What happens if I am offered a place to study locally?

A. Should you be offered a place at local universities for a course that is not offered by BSJV, we would not be able to sponsor you.

Q. How do I choose a suitable university course?

A. If you have successfully completed the Assessment Centre and is offered our Scholarship, we encourage you to consider the Top 10 ranking universities. Our Student Affairs team will advise you once you have reached this stage. 

Q. If I decided to accept for the BSJV Scholarship, what happens before going for further education?

A. You will undergo work experience attachment (WEA) with BSJV for 3 months.

Q. Will I be paid during the work assignment?

A. Yes, you will receive B$25 per working day allowance. 

Q. What are the other benefits which will be extended to me as a student while on assignment?

A. You will be entitled to the following: 
• Access to the Panaga Health Centre (for general medical treatment)
• Accommodation on sharing basis will be provided for students from outside Belait district. 
• Transport to and from work will be provided if they stay in the company’s accommodation.
Note: Students who are based in Belait District are expected to live with their family and no transport allowance will be paid.

Q. What happens if I fail my ‘A’ levels?

A. You are not eligible for Brunei Shell Joint Venture Scholarship.

Q. What happens during the summer holidays? 

A. Scholarship students are required to do an 8 weeks work assignment during the summer vacation every 2 years. The rest of the vacation may be taken as leave. Other summer holidays, students have the option to return to Brunei Darussalam for their work assignment, but under their own arrangements and expenses. 

Q. Do I get paid for my vacation work assignment?

A. If you return for your mandatory vacation work assignment, you will receive B$1,200 per month whilst in Brunei. However, your overseas living allowance will be frozen. 

Q. What happens if I have to return to Brunei for any reason during my studies? 

A. You are provided with a return trip to Brunei at the end of academic year (every 2 years). Normally any costs associated with extra trips to Brunei are on your own account. However, the Company may consider support in some compassionate cases. These will be decided on an individual basis and based on Company policy. 

Q. Can I get married whilst I am studying abroad?

A. Yes. However, we recommend that you should complete your studies first. If you choose to marry during your studies, all costs associated with transport/support of your spouse will be on your own expenses. 

Q. What happens if I fail my university exams?

A. Most institutions will allow resits of 2 papers per annum. BSJV will normally advise the first resit to be taken in Brunei. You must pass your resits to continue to the next semester/year. 

Q. What happens if I fail my exams badly and cannot complete my degree or if I decide I don’t want to finish my course?

A. In this case, your scholarship with BSJV is terminated. Following this termination, BSJV may at its discretion ask you to pay the costs in sponsoring you. 

Q. What happens if I want to leave BSJV Companies before I complete my bond? 

A. You will be liable to repay all costs incurred during your sponsorship. 

Q. If I do well in my studies, can I continue to do postgraduate studies?

A. Some students with very good first-degree results are supported to continue with their post graduate studies. Normally you will be required to return to BSJV at the end of your first degree to work for a minimum of two years before you can apply for an in-service sponsorship. 

Q. Can I choose to work outside Belait district when I graduate?

A. No. It all depends on your sponsoring department.

Q. If my permanent residence is outside Belait district, am I entitle to housing in Belait district?

A. Yes, subject to the rules of the housing policy when you are employed.
