Another Year, Another First: Fairley East LCD Platform Successful Installation

Published on December 6, 2024

2024 marked another milestone for BSP as it successfully sailed its second Low-Cost Development (LCD) offshore platform, the FAWJ09, in April. The four-legged Well Jacket sits at a water depth of approximately 64 metres in BSP’s West Asset. Building off the success of the 2023 Egret East LCD platform, the project team developed the Fairley East well jacket platform with similar basic functionalities – but better. As they created project value through replication and synergy, the team also ensured that they learn from mistakes and implemented the appropriate mitigations to enable smoother execution.

A NEW UNDERTAKING WITH NEW MILESTONES

The design of the Fairley East platform closely mirrored that of the Egret East, with transportation and installation methods following the same approach. Both platforms were installed using a jack-up rig, allowing the Fairley East project to leverage valuable lessons learned from Egret East. This strategy has played a crucial role in ensuring the project’s safe, successful, and timely completion.

The team collaborated across different sides of the business while demonstrating adaptability and technical proficiency, which in turn triggered a succession of innovative milestones.

The solar-powered platform achieved a reduced dry weight of 23% from Basis of Design and was the first in BSP to implement the hybrid acoustic gas detection system that enabled significant reduction in power consumption.

Additionally, it was also the first to apply a new concept in both BSP and Shell with the Dyneema rigging sling approach that improved lifting process, minimising risks of entanglements and strengthening the safety measures during the installation of the jacket. One of the key challenges faced was the need to reduce the overall weight of the jacket leg to ensure it stayed within the lifting capacity of the rig. After a thorough engineering assessment, the decision was made to remove some of the anodes, highlighting team’s expertise in overcoming challenges while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.

Set in delivering excellence, the sailaway of the jacket and topside was achieved 2 months ahead of schedule, with both the jacket leg and topside installed safely and efficiently. This accomplishment not only met the Gold Medal Target timeline set for the project but also achieved zero Lost-Time Injuries (LTI), underscoring the team’s commitment to both performance and safety.

MADE IN BRUNEI BY BRUNEIANS

The Fairley East project showcases the strong capabilities of Orang Kitani and saw the collaboration between local engineers, welders, inspectors, and designers across BSP and its business partner colleagues.

“Allhamdulilah. I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made on this project. The team’s expertise, dedication, and adaptability, coupled with strong leadership support, have been key to reaching our milestones. Like any BSP project, we’ve faced challenges, but our collective commitment to excellence and the Gold Medal Target (GMT) timeline for this project has been a driving force, maintaining our focus and motivating each of us to deliver our very best,” said Muhd Shahnuddin Hj Emran, Project Manager for BSP Major Project.

He further emphasised the focus Orang Kitani dedicated to safety and quality, which was the cornerstone of the team’s achievements.

“The Fairley East project not only contributes to Local Business Development but also creates opportunities for growth and new knowledge. What stands out most is the exceptional collaboration across departments, enabling us to overcome obstacles and keep moving forward, it’s been rewarding to see the team take ownership and deliver their best work – a true showcase of our capabilities to sustainably power Brunei!” he further shared.
