The Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) Companies awarded scholarships to twenty-nine (29)
exemplary students under the BSJV Scholarship Scheme this year. The BSJV companies
awarding the scholarships are Brunei Shell Petroleum Co., Brunei LNG (BLNG), Brunei Shell
Marketing Co. (BSM). The scholars will pursue higher education in local universities such as
Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) as well as abroad in the
United Kingdom.
Traditionally, the scholars’ achievements are feted in a contract signing ceremony. However,
this year a virtual awards ceremony was held instead. This is to ensure that we keep everyone
safe and comply to the guidelines put in place by the Ministry of Health in managing the
country’s second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The virtual ceremony was attended by Agnete Johnsgaard-Lewis, Shell Country Chair in Brunei
and Managing Director of BSP; Hjh Farida binti Dato Talib, Managing Director of BLNG,
Muhammad Norshafiee bin Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, Managing Director of BSM; as well
as the scholarship recipients.
In her opening remarks, Hajah Zainab binti M.A. Omar, BSP’s Human Resources Director,
stated that it is BSP’s vision that the company is led by competitive and capable Bruneians as
part of the cadre that drives Brunei’s industries beyond oil and gas. The strategy is to nurture,
develop and support the generation of Bruneian talent in order to have a robust and high-
quality pipeline for the company and the nation.
“We aim to invest in and develop people with a broad range of capabilities and skills to lead
the organisation, and ultimately contribute to Wawasan Brunei 2035. The BSJV Scholarship
Scheme is a great example of BSJV’s commitment to nurture our local talents. Since 1972,
BSJV has sponsored more than 800 students for scholarships. Through this scheme, many
young Bruneians have been able to pursue higher education locally and abroad,” Hajah
Zainab stated.
Nur Afini binti Ali is a BSP scholar who will be studying Geology at the University of
Edinburgh. Speaking on behalf of the cohort of scholars this year, Nur Afini said that she is
ready to tackle the challenges of studying and living abroad, even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanking BSP for the scholarship and the opportunity to fulfil her lifelong dream of
becoming a Geologist, she looks forward to join the company once she completes her studies.
“This is truly what’s special about the BSJV scholarship - the guaranteed job position and a
progressive career path as long as you are successful in your studies. I am thankful for the
opportunity! I promise to work hard in my studies and most importantly, I will try my best to
stay safe always,” she continued.
Highly coveted, the BSJV Scholarship Scheme is for post ‘A’ level/International Baccalaureate
Diploma/Advanced Diploma school leavers and is awarded to highly selected students to
pursue their Degree studies locally and overseas. Upon successful completion of their studies,
the scholars will join the BSJV companies as young professionals. In addition to job creations
and direct employment to BSJV companies, BSP also contributes to the needs of our business
in the energy industry, through growing and developing our local Bruneian talent funnel in
diverse disciplines which include petroleum, mechanical, process engineering, environmental
science, legal and aviation.
